The Seed to Seal™ process

seed-1seed-2

Young Living’s commitment to quality starts with seeds. The seeds we use are selected for their ability to become botanicals with high levels of bioactive compounds.

We then grow the seeds using cultivation practices that are dedicated to responsible and sustainable growing and harvesting methods.

Next, we distill using a gentle, proprietary technique for steam extracting essential oils and preserving their precious constituents.

To guarantee consistent, verifiable quality, our oils are tested in Young Living’s own internal labs, as well as in third-party facilities.

Finally, each essential oil is carefully bottled and labeled using state-of-the-art equipment.

Powerful, effective essential oils come from seeds and plants that are verified for their potential to produce high-quality essential oils.  Our essential oils come from plant species that have been authenticated by Young Living and industry experts. We nurture our seedlings in protected greenhouses before transferring them to the field. Sometimes we have to wait for over a year, but it’s a small sacrifice to make to produce the excellent essential oils.

Young Living farms, located around the globe, are dedicated to perfecting our responsible and sustainable growing and harvesting methods. Soil preparation, balance of sun and water, and responsible weed and pest control ensure our stringent standards are met.

We use a gentle technique for steam extracting essential oils and preserving their precious constituents. Young Living’s proprietary low-temperature, low-pressure steam distillation process assures that the beneficial plant compounds in every batch of oil remain uncompromised during the extraction process.  I have been at the Mona Utah farm and seen Lavender distilled!  My favorite part of the process was to see the oil and water divide. Just seeing how long the process takes is overwhelming.

We value authenticity in our essential oils so much that we make sure every step of the process is followed with precision and integrity. This is especially important when testing the purity and potency of our essential oils after distillation. Each batch of essential oil is sent through six rigorous tests and compared to established quality benchmarks:

  • Gas Chromatograph — Measures the percentage of constituents (plant chemicals) in the oil.
  • Mass Spectrometer — identifies the names of each constituent in the oil.
  • Refractive Index — Measures the density of the oil using a concentrated beam of light.
  • Specific Gravity — Measures how heavy the oil is as compared to water.
  • Flash Point — ignites the oil and tests it against standard flash temperatures.
  • Optical Rotation—Measures the molecular structure of the oil.

These tests can quickly determine if the oils have been subjected to dilution, cutting, or adulterated processes. Oils that exhibit even the slightest hint of possible adulteration or tampering are rejected. Additionally, tests confirm that the optimal level of beneficial constituents is present in each batch. Any oils that do not meet established levels are discarded. Young Living only seals and ships oils that meet both purity and potency standards. Young Living uses its own internal labs, in addition to third-party audits, to verify that Young Living purity and potency standards are met.

To ensure that Young Living is able to control every step of the Seed to Seal process, we own a number of farms and partner or co-op with many others around the world. Gary Young personally travels the globe to scout farms that offer ideal conditions for growing premium botanicals. This personal, direct involvement in the growing process is what allows us to ensure that each product delivered is of the highest quality and what our members around the world have come to expect.
