  • Also known as “olibanum” the name for frankincense comes from the Medieval French word “franc encens” meaning “real incense”.
  • Frankincense is considered the holy anointing oil in the Middle East and has been used in religious ceremonies for thousands of years.
  • It was one of the gifts given to Jesus Christ at His birth.
  • True frankincense comes from four main species of Boswellia, a scraggy and very hardy tree.
  • Resin from each species is available in various grades, depending on the time of harvesting.
  • Frankincense is tapped by slashing the bark, which is called striping, and allowing the exuded resin to bleed out and harden.
  • The trees start producing resin when they are about eight to ten years old.  Tapping is done two to three times a year with the final taps producing the best tears due to their higher aromatic terpene,
    sesquiterpene and diterpene content.
